CHAPTER SIX
“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” Mara demanded.
Falcon was astounded to find Mara waiting for him in the kitchen. She had a cup of coffee sitting in front of her. He could tell it was cold, which meant she had been there awhile. He hadn’t come home for supper, unable to face the thought of being near her and knowing he couldn’t touch. He hadn’t been far away, just in the barn, where he had worked soaping saddles that were in better shape than they had ever been, thanks to his restlessness. Was it possible she had been worried about him?
“I was in the barn,” he said. “Working on my saddle.”
“I thought something had happened to you. It’s so late. You’re usually in by dark.”
“You were worried about me,” Falcon murmured. “I’m sorry, Mara. I’ll let you know where I am next time.”
If anyone had told Falcon three months ago that he would have been willing to be accountable to anyone, let alone a woman, he would have slapped his knee at the jest and hurt his ribs laughing.
How the mighty had fallen.
Mara rose and crossed to the sink. “Susannah asked about you,” she said, as though to deny her own concern.
“Is she all right?” Falcon asked anxiously.
Mara left the cup in the sink and turned to face Falcon. “The doctor thinks she may be in remission.”
Falcon stared at her, stunned. Then he whooped and grabbed her around the waist and swung her in a circle. “This is fantastic!”
Mara held on so he wouldn’t drop her. “Let me down.”
Falcon set her down, but he kept his hands on her waist. He needed to hold on to someone, or he just might float off into space. “I can’t believe this is happening. It’s too soon. She’s only been in therapy ten weeks.”
“I know,” she said. “It’s…a miracle.”
Falcon looked at Mara and wondered why she wasn’t more excited. “You said may be in remission. Is there something you aren’t telling me? When will we know for sure?”
“Dr. Sortino wants to do a spinal tap tomorrow. We’ll know as soon as he gets the results from the test.”
“Susannah hates those back-sticks,” Falcon said. His hands tightened at Mara’s waist. “They hurt.”
“I know,” Mara said. “Will you come with us tomorrow?”
It was the first time she had asked him to join her. The first sign at all that she needed him for anything other than his money. “I’ll be glad to come with you.”
She smiled for the first time since he had come into the house. “I’m glad you’ll be there. Susannah has been asking when you’re going to come to the hospital with us.”
“She has?”
Mara stepped back, and Falcon let his hands drop. “She’s very attached to you,” she said.
“I’m attached to her, too,” Falcon said.
“Well, that’s what I waited up to tell you. Good night, Falcon.”
“Mara, wait.” Falcon didn’t want her to leave. He wanted to hold her. He wanted to sleep with her in his arms. He thought of the ultimatum Zach had wanted him to give her—how many weeks ago had that been?—and knew he still couldn’t do it.
